Focused Group Discussion on Unwanted Pregnancy Prevention

As one of GWIHR’s strategies in addressing the SRH needs of young sex workers, GWIHR organized a one day focus group discussion with young female sex workers to share their views on the best approaches to address and prevent unwanted pregnancies among their peers.

  • All young sex workers agreed that they use condoms, especially the female condom, to ensure double protection in cases of male condom breakage.
  • About 82% of the young female sex workers who participated in the discussion prefer using emergency contraceptive pills such as postinor 2 and misoprostol aside from condoms.
  • A minute proportion of 18% who could afford its cost prefers the injectable contraceptive because of its long-lasting nature, while.
After much deliberation on the justification for the use of each prevention option, GWIHR as an organization saw the need to lead strategic advocacies, especially in the Primary Health Centers in Rivers State, to scale-up accessibility of other pregnancy prevention options other than condoms because it is pretty evident that individual preferences determine the choice of service uptake by the users.
