Inauguration of the Rivers State Gender-Based Violence Technical Working Group (GBV-TWG)

Greater Women Initiative for Health and Right (GWIHR) recently participated in a significant two-day event organized by the Rivers State Ministry of Women Affairs. This event, in collaboration with Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organization (WEWE) and Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), marked the formal inauguration of Rivers State Gender-Based Violence Technical Working Group (GBV-TWG). GWIHR is proud to be a member of this crucial initiative.

Objectives of the Rivers State GBV-TWG

The primary goal of Rivers State GBV-TWG is to enhance coordination and collaboration among government entities, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders. This collaborative effort aims to improve the prevention of and response to gender-based violence (GBV) cases in Rivers State. Spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, the program involved the adoption of a comprehensive terms of reference, which now serves as the guiding document for the GBV-TWG

Training and Capacity Building

As part of the program, a step-down training will be conducted for all GBV-TWG members. This training will equip each member with the necessary skills to use the GBV database online platform and provide them with individual access logins. This initiative aims to streamline data collection and sharing, thereby improving the overall response to GBV incidents.

GWIHR's Role and Commitment

Through its participation in the Rivers State GBV-TWG, GWIHR is better positioned to collaborate, influence, and act effectively in the fight against gender-based violence. This involvement aligns with GWIHR’s mission to protect and empower sex workers, further advancing its commitment to human rights and gender equality.

The inauguration of the Rivers State GBV-TWG represents a significant step forward in addressing and mitigating gender-based violence in the region. With the combined efforts of government bodies, NGOs, and other stakeholders, there is a renewed hope for a coordinated and effective response to GBV, ultimately leading to a safer and more equitable society.
