On the 8th of October, 2024, GWIHR’s GBV Focal Person received a distress call on the toll-free helpline. A woman’s frantic voice pleaded, “Make una help me oh! Make una help me oh! Him wan kill me oh!” before the call abruptly disconnected. Alarmed, the Focal Person immediately attempted to call back, but the line was switched off. Despite repeated attempts, there was no response.
An hour later, the younger sister of the survivor called back crying for help from same number, reporting that her sister had been brutally beaten to the point of unconsciousness and urgently needed help. She provided the location—Choba. Without hesitation, the Focal Person contacted the Choba Police Station, prompting a swift response from officers.
GWIHR s focal person and the clinic team Upon arrival,with the police found the survivor lying on the floor, barely able to move. Her husband, the perpetrator, had already fled. She was immediately provided Emergency care by GWIHR clinic team on ground before been transported to GWIHR clinic where proper treatment commenced.
Meanwhile, The law enforcement launched an active search for the perpetrator who was successfully tracked down, apprehended, and taken into police custody. The survivor received full medical and psychosocial support until she was strong enough to return home and reunite with her children.
This case underscores the critical role of timely intervention in saving lives and ensuring justice for survivors of gender-based violence. GWIHR remains committed to providing swift and effective responses to protect vulnerable individuals and hold perpetrators accountable.
