GWIHR held a one day meeting with her community advisory group made up of young female and Transgender sex worker (YFTSW) . In GWIHR, these group of persons are referred to as “organizational analysts” because of their aptitude for developing the best approaches and strategies for program designs, implementation and monitoring that will meet the needs of the community while utilizing the Human Rights Approach. Funded by HALG under KPCARE 1 Project.
As sex workers, we understand our issues and the best approaches to address them. Members of this committee were selected based on their individual perceived efforts toward community self-services and development. They meet at the beginning of every GWIHR project design to review program strategies and determine what is currently working based on the societal trends of the community and youth-friendly engagement methodologies.
Furthermore, they help the organization to strategically and independently engage their peers at various locations and determine different societal myths and practices that hamper access to service uptake hence providing the organization with quarterly and monthly advocacy "ask" to policymakers and institutional stakeholders.
Particularly for Today’s engagement, the Community Advisory Group raised their concern on the need to roll out new and multiple HIV prevention options for young female and transgender sex workers due to the difficulties associated with daily dosage of oral PrEP and stigmatizing infodemics of PrEP being ARV. The committee also discussed how to expand referral sites for HIV testing and treatment services, especially for young sex workers operating in the rural communities of Akwa-Ibom State to reduce long facility distances.
Given these concerns, the Executive Director of GWIHR promised the Community Advisory Committee that the above-mentioned issues will be addressed in the coming fiscal year with support from HALG.
