GWIHR Advocates for Better GBV Response for Sex Workers with New Guidelines

In a significant move to address gender-based violence (GBV) and advocate for the rights of sex workers in Rivers State, GWIHR team recently visited Dr. Mrs. Mary Obisike, the GBV Director for the Ministry of Health. During the visit, GWIHR presented new guidelines designed to improve the response to GBV cases involving sex workers.

These guidelines are a crucial tool in the fight against gender-based violence, offering a structured approach to support sex workers, who are often vulnerable to such violence. By setting out clear protocols, the guidelines aim to ensure sex workers receive the protection, support, and justice they deserve.

The guidelines will equip healthcare providers, law enforcement officials, and community advocates with the knowledge and tools needed to respond effectively to GBV incidents involving sex workers. By raising awareness and understanding, the guidelines strive to create a more inclusive and just environment where sex workers can access their rights without fear of discrimination.

A key goal of the guidelines is to address the unique challenges faced by sex workers, including stigma and bias that often prevent them from seeking help. By promoting an informed and compassionate approach, the guidelines seek to build a supportive network that prioritizes the safety and well-being of sex workers.

Dr. Mrs. Mary Obisike expressed her support for the initiative and acknowledged the importance of having specialized guidelines to address the needs of sex workers. She emphasized the Ministry of Health’s commitment to ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their occupation, have equal access to protection and justice.

GWIHR team highlighted that these guidelines are part of a broader effort to promote equal rights and access to justice for all individuals in Rivers State. By focusing on sex workers, who are often marginalized, this initiative underscores the importance of inclusive policies that protect the rights of every community member.

Moving forward, GWIHR plans to work closely with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to implement these guidelines effectively. Training sessions and workshops will be conducted to ensure all parties understand the new protocols and can respond to GBV cases involving sex workers with sensitivity and efficiency.

This advocacy visit and the introduction of the guidelines mark a significant step toward a more equitable and responsive approach to GBV in Rivers State. By championing the rights of sex workers and providing the necessary tools for their protection, GWIHR and the Ministry of Health are paving the way for a safer and more just society for all.
