Project Summary

GWIHR is working as a principal recipient under the PEPFAR Small Grant Program to break the cycle of silence of violence targeted at sex workers in Akwa-Ibom State. The Project goal is to increase access to justice for sex workers and improve their living standards by mobilizing sex workers to become agent of change and work towards preventing and reducing all forms of human right violation targeted at them and their children in Akwa-Ibom State.
Program Objectives
  1. Advocacy to shape institutional accountability for existing laws and policies upholding the rights of sex workers in Akwa-Ibom State by May 2022.
  2. Increase awareness of 1000 sex workers on sex work-related laws and human rights by May 2022.
  3. To improve the livelihood of 22 sex workers in Akwa-Ibom State by May 2022.
  4. To increase access to mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services among sex workers exposed to violence and other social vices by May 2022.

Fore Fronting Our Agenda: Speak Out Loud (FOFA-SOL)

A 6 months GBV response intervention that focuses on strengthening institutional accountability of the law enforcement agencies on the importance of developing an effective, accountable, and transparent institution that promotes access to justice for sex workers to reduce gender-based violence against sex workers in Abia State. Also, the project will build the capacity of sex workers on income-generating skills to give sex workers economic power to make informed choices about their lives and working conditions. This project is funded by French Embassy in Nigeria

GWIHR held Sensitization Workshop with the Police to Strengthen Police Relationship with Sex Workers.
The sensitization workshop was conducted to raise awareness on sex related laws, VAPP Act, and also to strengthen the relationship between sex workers and police to minimize police harassment and discriminatory attitudes towards sex workers. The sensitization is for police to participate in upholding and protecting the rights of sex workers.
